Raleigh Magic Club FAQs

No. The Raleigh Magic Club welcomes anyone with a sincere interest in the performance art of magic. Our Club includes members who are magic enthusiasts, collectors, historians, and beginners as well as part-time and full-time professional performers.

The Society of American Magicians is the world’s oldest magic organization. Founded on May 10, 1902, the S.A.M. has had over 50,000 members world-wide, including the prestigious prestidigitators Harry Houdini, Harry Kellar, Howard Thurston, and Al Baker, just to name a few. The S.A.M. has nearly 300 local chapters, called Assemblies. Raleigh Magic Club founded S.A.M. Assembly 199 in 2022.

The International Brotherhood of Magicians is the world’s largest organization for magicians and magic enthusiasts boasting over 14,000 members worldwide. Members share a common interest in promoting, performing, learning and advancing the performance art of magic. The I.B.M. is divided into local chapters commonly referred to as Rings. Together, these Rings create the international organization. Ring 199 was founded in 1970. A brief history of the I.B.M., the S.A.M. and Raleigh Magic Club may be found here.

All Full Members are highly encouraged to join one or both parent organizations. Both the I.B.M. and the S.A.M. offer great benefits to their members. The monthly publications alone are worth the price of annual membership. To learn more about joining the I.B.M., visit www.magician.org/join-the-ibm/why-join. To learn more about joining the S.A.M., visit www.magicsam.com.

RMC generally meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 7:00 - 9:00 PM at Meredith College, Wainwright Room 106. An informal Magic Jam and Workshop is held every third Tuesday at 7:30 PM EST at the Harlan home in Clayton, NC. Scheduled meetings and locations may vary due to holidays and other events, so please consult the RMC Calendar before heading out. We also have lectures, social events, and other RMC activities throughout the year.

Youth members range from 8 through 17 years of age. Adult membership is open to any adult 18 years of age and older.

Aside from the social and professional support offered through RMC, members enjoy free or discounted access to lectures, workshops, and social events hosted by the Club. The Club hosts an annual magic auction, performance showcases, friendly competitions, and more. Club members may receive group discounts for professional magic performances across the Triangle. RMC’s emails, website, and Facebook page will keep you well informed on magic events, lectures, and workshops happening across the Triangle. Members may also request and receive hands-on coaching and direction from more experienced members of the Club. Additionally, at each meeting, members give Magic Chats, mini-lectures that teach on a variety of magical topics. All members receive access to our Members Only Webpage, with recordings of past meetings, lectures, and other magic content, as well as our Raleigh Magic Club Library with over 200 titles available to members.

The Club has hosted such magic luminaries as Jay Scott Berry, Joshua Jay, Michael Ammar, Bob Sheets, Eugene Burger, Jeff McBride, and many more. The Raleigh Magic Club generally hosts two to four professional lectures and/or workshops each year.

Annual Club dues are $25.00 covering the calendar year. Dues paid during the months of July through December are prorated at 50% or $12.50.

Annual Club dues are applied toward various member activities including discounted lectures, workshops, and social events. Annual dues also support this website and other club operating expenses.

No. Club officers and committee members are all unpaid volunteers. The Club is a nonprofit organization.

Club Membership may be started by paying dues through the website. Once this is done, you are considered a Supporting Member, and a Raleigh Magic Club Board Member will reach out to you to answer any questions. From there, all you need to do is attend a general meeting and introduce yourself. You will find yourself among friends and peers! Full Members are required to perform two magic effects - one at each of two meetings. This is not a test! You can perform the simplest of magic effects straight out of the box or a complex theatrical piece! This is an icebreaker designed solely to help you feel comfortable among the RMC members. Raleigh Magic Club members are your greatest supporters.

SUPPORTING MEMBER - Any Raleigh Magic Club Member who has paid their annual dues.

FULL MEMBER - A Raleigh Magic Club Member who has paid their annual dues, performed two separate performances for membership, and has been voted in as a Full Member. Full members may vote and receive their RMC wand at the next Wand Ceremony.

YOUTH MEMBER - A Raleigh Magic Club Member under the age of 17. Youth Members may still perform for Full Membership Status (and therefore can receive their wand at the next Wand Ceremony); however, they do not have full voting privileges until they turn 18 years old.

STUDENT MEMBER - A Raleigh Magic Club Member over the age of 18 who is actively enrolled in school, college, or university. These members have the same option to become a Full Member, but may pay discounted dues.

LIFE MEMBER - Active Members who have significantly contributed to the Raleigh-Durham or national Magic Community for an extended period of time (with such service being exemplary and exceptional) may be nominated through the Organization’s Executive Committee and awarded Life Membership by a majority vote of the general membership. Life Members are exempt from paying annual dues to the Organization.

HONORARY MEMBER - Individuals of note who do not reside within or near the Raleigh-Durham community and have significantly contributed to the Magic Community for an extended period-of-time and have significantly advanced the Performance Art of Magic. Like Life Members, they may be nominated  through the Organization’s Executive Committee and awarded Honorary Membership by a majority vote of the general membership. Honorary Members are exempt from paying annual dues to the Organization.

No. Accompanying parents are always welcome (and encouraged!) to sit in and observe any meeting or session their child is involved in.

We are not a secret society. We believe that the performance art of magic must be shared to be truly appreciated. However, we do protect the secrets of our craft. We believe that revealing a magic secret reduces a beautiful and hard-worked magic effect into a baseless puzzle with no real charm. The true joy of magic is found in its secrets. If ever you have a question about ethically sharing magical secrets within the magic community, please reach out to us for guidance.

Wand Ceremonies take place twice a year. Once a Supporting Member completes their two performances for Full Membership and are officially voted into RMC, they are invited to attend the next Wand Ceremony. The Wand Ceremony is a formal acknowledgement of membership and the value of our Art. After participating new Members commit their adherence to RMC’s Statement of Purpose, they receive their RMC Wand.

  • To foster among our members the development of magic talent and to stimulate interest in the magical arts.
  • To promote fellowship among those interested in magic.
  • To advance ethics in magic.
  • To encourage appreciation of magic as a performing art by the general public.
