The RMC Code of Ethics Raleigh Magic Club

Code of Ethics

The Raleigh Magic Club is a community of people who share a love of magic. We strive to create an environment where magicians of all backgrounds, experience levels, and abilities can learn, perform, experiment, and grow together.

Membership in RMC carries with it a responsibility to treat fellow members, guests, performers, and the art of magic with respect. To that end, we ask all members to uphold the following principles:

Protect the Mystery

We respect the secrets and methods that make magic possible.

Members should not intentionally expose the methods of magic to the public, whether in person, online, through social media, video platforms, or other means. This includes refraining from creating, engaging with, commenting on, or sharing content whose purpose is to expose the methods of another magician's performance.

When in doubt, protect the mystery.

Respect the Performer

When someone is performing, we give them our attention and our respect.

Members should refrain from side conversations, disruptive behavior, or other distractions during performances. We encourage performers through our attention, applause, and enthusiasm, and when a performance doesn't go as planned, we support the performer rather than making them feel embarrassed or diminished.

A missed move, failed trick, or unexpected moment is part of being a magician. We know how vulnerable it can feel to perform. We take care of one another.

Laugh With, Not At

Magic is supposed to be fun.

We joke, tease, celebrate, and laugh together, but never at the expense of another person's dignity. We do not use someone's mistakes, inexperience, appearance, identity, or vulnerability as a source of ridicule.

Whenever possible, be the person who makes someone feel more welcome, not less.

Offer Feedback with Consent

We recognize that feedback is valuable, but so is the choice of when and how to receive it.

Unless feedback or critique has been specifically requested, members should not offer unsolicited criticism or opinions about another person's performance, routine, presentation, or creative work.

If you have something you think might be helpful, simply ask:

“Would you like some feedback?”

If the answer is no, respect that answer.

Our goal is to help one another grow, not to prove that we know better.

Practice Compeer

Within RMC, we are compeers: people who share the same pursuit and stand alongside one another as equals.

Experience, skill, reputation, age, or level of mastery does not determine a person's worth within our community. A beginner has something to learn, but they also have something to contribute. A seasoned professional has much to teach, but remains a fellow magician.

We approach one another with humility, curiosity, and respect.

There are no little magicians in RMC.

Act with Integrity

Members are expected to conduct themselves lawfully and responsibly, both within RMC and in their activities as representatives of the magic community.

We do not condone illegal or intentionally harmful behavior.

Our Standard

The Code of Ethics is not intended to tell members how to be perfect. Magicians are people, and people make mistakes.

It is a statement of the kind of community we want RMC to be:

Protect the mystery.
Respect the performer.

Laugh together, never at one another.
Ask before offering criticism.
Treat your compeers as equals.
Act with integrity.

We are here to make each other—and magic—better.

We have a new home for our October meeting!

After Friday's announcement about our unexpected move from Meredith, we are thrilled to let you know that tomorrow's RMC meeting will take place at The Raleigh Times in downtown Raleigh. (Learn more about The Raleigh Times HERE!)

And this isn't just a temporary emergency location. The Raleigh Times is part of Empire Eats, a restaurant and events collective built on the cornerstone of community, and we are exploring the possibility of making this the new home of RMC.

Tomorrow will be a bit of a trial run for both RMC and Raleigh Times. If it works well for everyone, this could become our regular meeting location! Empire Eats has already been wonderful to work with, we share the same values, and we're excited about the possibilities for what this partnership could become.

But for now, here's what you need to know:

🎩 RMC TOMORROW NIGHT

Tuesday, October 6
7:00–9:00 PM

The Raleigh Times
14 E Hargett St.
Raleigh, NC 27601

🅿️ PARKING

Downtown parking was one of our biggest concerns, but there are actually lots of nearby options (did you catch what I did there? Lots... like... parking lots....sigh), including several parking decks that offer free parking after 6:00 PM.

The Raleigh Times recommends:

Moore Square Parking Deck
223 S. Wilmington Street

It's directly across the street and free after 6:00 PM.

Empire Eats has also provided a map showing the nearby parking options, which we've included below.

💻 CAN'T MAKE IT IN PERSON?

We'll still have Zoom!

If you can't join us in person, we'd love for you to join us online, especially for the first 15 minutes or so. We have some important RMC business to take care of, including voting on our Constitution and Bylaws, and your participation will help us reach quorum.

https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82225031421?pwd=TAyxjSroSVhcq9p8VhBIOTMlDJo78M.1
Meeting ID: 822 2503 1421
Passcode: RMC199ZOOM

And if you're able to join us in person, we're hoping you'll stick around after the meeting!

Raleigh Times is happy to have us stay and jam after our official meeting ends at 9:00 PM, so we're no longer going to have to rush across the street hoping to make it before the kitchen closes. 😂 We can hang out, talk magic, and enjoy the space together until closing at 11:00 PM.

We're really excited to see everyone tomorrow. And even more excited to see what this next chapter of RMC looks like.

Thank you all for being part of this club.

We're already finding that when one door closes, another one opens. And this one seems pretty magical.

With much magic,
SarahElla Harlan
